I did not know that but will certainly be more aware of when the items I buy go on sale. Hopefully, this is something the price book will help me keep track of.
In answer to your question, I think the menu rotation helps because it is very flexible. I don't have specific recipes that we go through, it is more like categories - "Meat Roast" on Sunday (which could be pork loin, or beef roast, or ham or...) Soup on Monday (meant to use up leftovers from the Sunday roast), Tuesday night is ground beef, Wednesday night is chicken, etc.
So for my shopping list, I don't always have a specific cut of meat listed, I just know I need a roast of some sort, so many pounds of ground beef, so many pounds of chicken (depending on which cuts are on sale) etc. I hope that makes sense. Maybe that's another blog post! The Academy of the Good Shepherdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03532215376466282909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414152713480801989.post-22221766621457082062011-02-22T16:35:42.230-05:002011-02-22T16:35:42.230-05:00This is really helpful to see, Becky. One thing I have learned is that stores have a 12-week cycle for sales, so if you can stock up on non-perishables when the prices dip low, it can save you a lot. I often buy multiples of items on sale and so I have a stockpile at home and I can wait until the next sale cycle.
Do you think the set menu plan makes it harder to take advantage of sales on meat and produce? Or do you plan sort of by type of meal (like a "beef dish with a green vegetable", instead of "stew with broccoli")? I found the first way let me shop sales a little better.Carolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15304563767667167446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414152713480801989.post-55400995118817602412011-02-22T15:38:14.102-05:002011-02-22T15:38:14.102-05:00I like the pantry list idea Erin. That would save a lot of time when I'm making my shopping list and I would have less chance of forgetting something. The Academy of the Good Shepherdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03532215376466282909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414152713480801989.post-6289505530219309522011-02-22T14:23:31.295-05:002011-02-22T14:23:31.295-05:00Oh what I do have is a master pantry list taped in...Oh what I do have is a master pantry list taped inside my pantry. I found I hated trying to remember each month how much of an item we always needed. My pantry list is identical to my shopping list but has numbers typed in, ie. sauce 4. So I don't have to think, I just check how much I have and then write how much I need to stock up on.Erinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04448595911801738792noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414152713480801989.post-19144619355015072832011-02-22T14:21:42.343-05:002011-02-22T14:21:42.343-05:00He is cute:) How amazing, we shop in nearly the s...He is cute:) How amazing, we shop in nearly the same manner. Although I don't have a price book. A local friend had her dd go to the three supermarkets and do a price comparison of items she used. So I now know which is the cheapest store and just shop at the one place. but like yourself I shop monthly, plan monthly and have an itemized Excel spreadsheet with items and amount columns.Erinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04448595911801738792noreply@blogger.com
